The Visitation Arrowood 2003 after Overbeck 1800's Oil on Canvas 29 1/2" x 24" Johann Frederick Overbeck (German, 1789-1869): Painted in the 1800's, Overbeck's original " Visitation" is displayed at the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery. It depicts a young Mary visiting with Elizabeth after the conception of their sons.

Jusepe de Ribera also called Lo Spagnolletto,(Spanish, 1591-1652): The
original of Ribera's masterful yet sensitive portrait of Christ has been in
the permanent collection of the Bob Jones Art Museum and Gallery in
Greenville, South Carolina since 1952.
My appreciation of the BJU Museum and Gallery began as a child. I was
fascinated by the place and Ecce Homo was my favorite painting. At that age,
I was not aware that there was an explanation for why the eyes of Christ
followed me around the room...even knowing the artistic reason, I am still
awed by the fact that He watches me no matter where I am.

Madonna of the Book

Sandro Botticelli ( Florentine, 1455-1510 ): Botticelli's "Madonna of the Book" was painted around 1480. It is exhibited at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan. Botticelli, under the patronage of the Medici was the leading Florentine painter of his time.
Artist 's Notes: The completion of this little Botticelli was facilitated by the kindness of a stranger at the Museo Poldi who responded to my pleading e-mails for a picture of the book. I would have been unable to complete the script on the book without his help. I am also indebted to my husband who supplied the 24 carat gold leaf and powdered gold for the haloes. It was really a pleasure to recreate this work. Master Botticelli taught me much!

The Lost Rembrandt
I had been considering painting Rembrandt's "Storm on the Sea of Galilee", but finding a good reference was proving difficult. The four that I had found could have been four different paintings. That is the problem that one encounters when attempting a reproduction...The solution is to work before the Master's original, but that is not always possible. My problem appeared to be solved when I found a Gardner Museum brochure on the floor at the Boston Museum Of Fine Arts...It's cover pictured Rembrandt 's "Storm" and I made plans to see it at the Gardner the following day. Unfortunately, it was not to be...For unknown to me, I and the rest of the world had been robbed one evening on St. Patrick's Day in 1990. On that evening, two men in police uniforms faked their way into the Museum, bound and gagged the security staff, and used razors to slice several pictures from their frames... In 2004, Rembrandt's only seascape remains lost to all of us.

Henri Regnault, A Loss to Art
Henri Regnault ( French, 1843-1871 ): Regnault's original painting, measuring more than ten feet square, is on permanent display at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The painting depicts Achilles' chariot driver, Automedon, struggling to control Xanthos and Balios. The horses, sensing that their master will be killed, resist being harnessed to the chariot that will carry Achilles into his final, fatal battle. Regnault , a student in Rome, was only 25 when he painted this heroic piece. It was displayed at the Paris Salon, a notable honor for the young artist. Two years later, at the age of twenty-seven, Henri Regnault's bright future ended in Paris during the final hour of the Franco-Prussian War. But that's another story..

Dominico Zampieri (Bolognese,1581-1641) A student of Carracci, Il Dominichino-as he was known-was one of the most important upholders of the tradition of Bolognese classicism. His original St. John may be viewed at The Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina. The painting includes the symbolic attributes of St. John. The snake alludes to his having withstood poison as proof of his faith. The scroll and book represent his writings.
